For indoor, you can use both. For outdoor, prefer synthetic hemp.

Natural hemp, as its name suggests, is made exclusively from hemp fiber. It is very soft to the touch and does not burn hands with rubbing. It offers an authentic and rustic appearance and emits a slight smell that reinforces its natural effect.

Synthetic hemp is made from textured polypropylene fibres. It has the advantage of being UV-treated and resistant to weather and moisture, which makes it more durable in the long term. Its appearance and touch are a very good imitation of natural hemp. 

Our polished hemp rope and natural (unpolished) hemp rope are both made from the same 100% natural and biodegradable hemp fibres. The only difference lies in their finish, which gives each rope a distinct appearance and feel.

• Natural (unpolished) hemp rope has a fibrous appearance and a very soft feel. It offers an authentic, natural, and rustic look.
• Polished hemp rope has a smoother, stiffer, and more uniform appearance than natural hemp rope. Before twisting, the fibres are coated with a natural adhesive to create the characteristic "polished" finish. This process gives the rope a refined and elegant appearance.

Hemp has a slight natural smell similar to that of hay. Its odor fades away and disappears over time.

To quickly remove the smell of hemp, let the rope air out for several days.

The fibres of natural hemp are sensitive to moisture. It is not recommended to store hemp rope outdoors or in a closed place with moisture if you want to keep its quality in the long term.

For outdoor use, we advise you to buy the synthetic hemp rope because it is rot-proof, anti-UV treated. It will not be damaged in the long term, regardless of weather conditions.

Longer life

The synthetic rope is suitable for long-term decoration of your exterior. You can choose the synthetic hemp rope for a natural effect guaranteed.

A handrail rope can be installed in different ways depending on the desired look and the accessories you choose.

1. Select the right accessories for your project

Start by selecting end fittings and rings that are compatible with the diameter of your rope and match the style you are looking for.

• For the ends of the handrail, you can choose from different types of end fittings: standard end fitting, end fitting with hook, wall-mounted end fitting, or end fitting with snap hook.
• Along the staircase, wall rings guide and support the rope. We generally recommend installing 1 ring every 80 cm. This spacing creates a slight curve in the rope.
• If your staircase has an angle or turn, use our rings specially designed for corners at 90°, for inside and/or outside corners.

2. Position the rope at the correct height

Position your handrail at a height that provides a natural and comfortable grip throughout the staircase. Mark the location of the different fixing points before drilling.

3. Fix the accessories to the wall

The rings and end fittings must be fixed to a strong and secure surface, such as wood or concrete. Do not fix the accessories directly to plasterboard: the fixing could pull out under pressure and would not ensure safe use of the handrail.

Our accessories are supplied with suitable fixing screws for installation.

4. Cut and secure the rope

Once the rope is positioned through the rings and inside the end fittings, tighten the grub screws. As they are tightened, they penetrate the rope and hold it firmly in position.

The end of the rope may sometimes swell slightly, making it difficult to insert into the end fitting or ring. If this happens, wrap it tightly with electrical tape before cutting it, then insert it into the end fitting. This will give you a more compact end that is easier to fit.

For outdoor installation, we recommend using:

• Ropes that are both twisted for a comfortable grip and synthetic for resistance to moisture and UV rays. Synthetic hemp rope and polyester rope are generally preferred.
• Stainless steel fixing accessories, which will not rust, unlike nickel-plated steel accessories, for example.

Polypropylene is the most economical and lightweight fibre. It has an excellent quality/price ratio for uses that do not require a rope with a high performance mechanical strength.

Polypropylene is floating and hydrophobic. It can be in permanent contact with water without degrading itself. It is resistant to moisture.

Density: 0.91

Polypropylene fiber has good UV resistance but it is still inferior to polyester and nylon.

For a better outdoor life, make sure that your polypropylene rope is treated against UV. All our polypropylene ropes are.

Polypropylene is resistant to mites, bacteria, strong acids and alkalis and ordinary solvents. It is sensitive to aromatic compounds. It dissolves in chlorinated solvents at high temperatures.

• Recommended diameter: 3, 4 or 5 mm, depending on the desired look. Please note that only our 3 mm x 50 m spool fits through the center of an Acapulco chair.
• Recommended length: approximately 150 m of cord for one chair.
