Shape of the net
Before ordering a custom hay net sheet, make sure the required dimensions are different from our standard sizes.
Here is a table reminding you of our standard hay net sheets:
| Width x Length available in stock | Mesh sizes available in stock |
| 1 x 1 m | 30 mm; 45 mm; 60 mm; 100 mm |
| 2 x 2 m | 30 mm; 45 mm; 60 mm; 100 mm |
| 2.5 x 2.5 m | 30 mm; 45 mm; 60 mm; 100 mm |
| 3 x 3 m | 30 mm; 45 mm; 60 mm; 100 mm |
| 3 x 4 m | 45 mm; 60 mm |
| 3.5 x 3.5 m | 30 mm; 45 mm; 60 mm; 100 mm |
| 4 x 4 m | 30 mm; 45 mm; 60 mm; 100 mm |
|
* If the size that would perfectly match your needs is very close to one of our in-stock nets, we recommend choosing the in-stock option. * Custom-made nets should only be ordered if your needs differ significantly from what we offer in stock. Example: if you want a 2 x 4 m net! |

Advantages of the standard hay net sheet:
- Wide choice of mesh sizes and dimensions
- Available in stock
- Delivery in 24–48 hours
Advantages of the custom hay net sheet:
- Free choice of dimensions
- Can meet specific needs for non-standard sizes
Nets are made with full mesh sizes, which may create a 1 to 3 cm variation in length and width. Full-mesh manufacturing provides better strength.
How to choose the right net size?
The size is determined by measuring your hay feeder (rack) dimensions and the volume of forage it contains.
- The greatest height or depth (relative to the top edge of the feeder) must be added to the ground size of the feeder, both to the width and the length of the net.
- Example: if the hay rises 1 m above the top edge of the feeder, and the depth is 20 cm, take a 1 m allowance beyond the feeder size. Example: if the feeder is 2 m x 2 m, choose a 3 m x 3 m net.
- Another example: if your feeder measures 2 x 4 m and the hay rises 50 cm above the edge (feeder depth is less than 50 cm), you should plan for a 2.5 x 4.5 m net.
Which mesh size should you choose?
Mesh choice may vary depending on net shape, hay compression, and fiber length.
For the same mesh size, hay distribution will be different in a bag-shaped net and a round bale net. All of the following parameters should be considered when choosing your net.
- In a bag-shaped net, hay is generally loose
- In a round bale net, hay is compressed
The slowdown of intake also depends on hay compression and fiber length.
- Hay compression: hay compressed in a bale is harder to grab than loose hay in a bag
- Fiber length: short-stem hay is harder to grab than long-stem hay
| Outer mesh | Inner mesh | Color | Goal |
| 100 mm | 90 mm | Green |
Large mesh |
| 60 mm | 50 mm | Green |
Medium mesh |
| 45 mm | 35 mm | Camel |
Small mesh |
| 35 mm | 25 mm | Green |
Very small mesh |
Why order a custom hay net sheet?

Hay net for horses for hay racks, hay bins, pallet boxes (palox), and large feeders.
Net color:
- 35 mm, 60 mm, and 100 mm mesh: Green
- 45 mm mesh: Camel
Usage tips
- Keep the net elevated so the horse cannot get its hoof caught in the net and to avoid any risk of injury.
- The 100 mm mesh net must not touch the ground so the animal cannot injure itself by getting a hoof caught. The 100 mm mesh net must be used in a feeder with a closed base.
The net can be cleaned in several ways:
- Rinse with a garden hose
- Wash at home in a washing machine or at a laundromat
- Soak for several hours in a bathtub or large container
The smaller the mesh, the slower the hay is taken in.
| Mesh size (outer) | Purpose | |
| 100 mm | Very large mes | Limit hay waste, familiarisation with the net |
| 60 mm | Large mesh | Consumption slows down, transition to slow feeding |
| 45 mm | Small mesh | Introduction to slow feeding |
| 35 mm | Very small mesh | Slow feeding intensification |
| Note: The size expressed is that of the outer mesh. To calculate the inner mesh, you must subtract 10mm. | ||
The slow down of ingestion also depends on the level of hay compression and the length of the stalks.
For the same mesh, the distribution of hay will be different in a bag net and a round ball net.
- In a net bag, usually hay is loose
- In a round ball net, hay is compressed
- Hay compaction: hay compressed in a haystack will be harder to catch than hay loose in a bag
- Length of the strands: hay with short strand is more difficult to catch than hay with long strand
Tips :
- If your horses cannot all eat with the mesh installed, you can arrange several different mesh nets.
- Our bag nets are also available in double mesh with different size of mesh on each side.
If this is the first time you have put hay in a net and your horse is not used to it, he may be frustrated and can get angry. We advise you to gently accustom your horse to limit his frustration.
- Ruffle the hay out of the tufts of the mesh and leave some loose hay next to the nets.
- Choose a wide mesh net (60mm, 100mm) to promote a smooth transition.
Despite all the care taken in manufacturing, the net is a textile product that can be damaged by installation or use.
To repair the hole of your hay net, you can sew your stitches with a sharp needle of 1mm maximum and linen string of 0.3mm.

| 60 mm | Large mesh | Consumption slows down, transition to slow feeding |
