Do custom hay nets follow the same specifications as standard nets?
Our custom sock-shaped hay nets for square bales are of the same quality and follow the same specifications as the standard round bale hay nets. The only difference between these two designs is the net shape. The square bale net has a square opening designed to slide easily over a square bale, while the round bale net has a round opening designed, as its name suggests, for round bales.
Knotless net, very soft to the touch, very flexible, and gentle on horses’ gums
Wear-resistant, odorless, and rot-proof. Superior quality.
- Square opening
- High-strength polypropylene (PPHR)
- Ø 5 mm twine for maximum strength and durability

Why order a custom square bale net?
- It is the ideal alternative if our standard round bale nets do not meet your needs.
- You can choose the mesh size as well as the length and width down to the centimeter. Enjoy a net that perfectly matches your setup!
Which dimensions should you choose?
The choice of dimensions for a square bale hay net depends on several factors:
- The size of your bales
The net should be at least 30 cm wider than the bale (on each side) so it can be fitted easily. For example, for a bale measuring 120 x 120 cm, choose a net 150 x 150 cm wide.
- The compression level of the hay
If the bales are loosely compressed, allow a margin of 40 cm to fit the net easily. For example, for a loosely compressed bale of 120 x 120 cm, choose a net 160 x 160 cm wide.
- Consistency of bale sizes
If bale sizes vary significantly, choose a net suited to the largest bales.
Nets are manufactured using full mesh units, which may create a size variation of 1 to 3 cm in length and width. Full-mesh manufacturing ensures better net strength.

The opening is always Width x Length.
Which mesh size should you choose?
Mesh choice may vary depending on net shape, hay compression, and fiber length.
For the same mesh size, hay distribution will be different in a bag-shaped net and a round bale net. All of the following parameters should be considered when choosing your net.
- In a bag-shaped net, hay is generally loose
- In a round bale net, hay is compressed
The slowdown of intake also depends on hay compression and fiber length.
- Hay compression: hay compressed in a bale is harder to grab than loose hay in a bag
- Fiber length: short-stem hay is harder to grab than long-stem hay
| Outer mesh | Inner mesh | Color | Goal |
| 100 mm | 90 mm | Green |
Large mesh |
| 60 mm | 50 mm | Green |
Medium mesh |
| 45 mm | 35 mm | Camel |
Small mesh |
| 30 mm |
20 mm | Green |
Very small mesh |
How to fit the hay bale?
- Net higher than the bale: place the bale inside the net or slide the net over the bale, lift the sides of the net, and attach them to something suspended from the ceiling.
- Net the same height as the bale: place the bale inside the net or slide the net over it, then secure the bottom of the net with a strap or bungee cord.
How do I wash my net?
The net can be cleaned in several ways:
- Rinse with a garden hose
- Wash at home in a washing machine or at a laundromat
- Soak for several hours in a bathtub or large container
Usage tips:
- Keep the net elevated so the horse cannot get a hoof caught. Placing the hay on a pallet or a large tire prevents the horse from stepping on it and causing the hay to rot. The 100 mm mesh net must not touch the ground and must be used in a feeder with a closed base.
- In wet or muddy conditions, place several feeding points to help preserve the ground.
The smaller the mesh, the slower the hay is taken in.
| Mesh size (outer) | Purpose | |
| 100 mm | Very large mes | Limit hay waste, familiarisation with the net |
| 60 mm | Large mesh | Consumption slows down, transition to slow feeding |
| 45 mm | Small mesh | Introduction to slow feeding |
| 35 mm | Very small mesh | Slow feeding intensification |
| Note: The size expressed is that of the outer mesh. To calculate the inner mesh, you must subtract 10mm. | ||
The slow down of ingestion also depends on the level of hay compression and the length of the stalks.
For the same mesh, the distribution of hay will be different in a bag net and a round ball net.
- In a net bag, usually hay is loose
- In a round ball net, hay is compressed
- Hay compaction: hay compressed in a haystack will be harder to catch than hay loose in a bag
- Length of the strands: hay with short strand is more difficult to catch than hay with long strand
Tips :
- If your horses cannot all eat with the mesh installed, you can arrange several different mesh nets.
- Our bag nets are also available in double mesh with different size of mesh on each side.
If this is the first time you have put hay in a net and your horse is not used to it, he may be frustrated and can get angry. We advise you to gently accustom your horse to limit his frustration.
- Ruffle the hay out of the tufts of the mesh and leave some loose hay next to the nets.
- Choose a wide mesh net (60mm, 100mm) to promote a smooth transition.
Despite all the care taken in manufacturing, the net is a textile product that can be damaged by installation or use.
To repair the hole of your hay net, you can sew your stitches with a sharp needle of 1mm maximum and linen string of 0.3mm.

Customer review
